Walking in County Donegal
I spent the August Bank Holiday in County Donegal with friends from An Óige (my walking club). For three nights we stayed in Tra na Rosann – the most northerly Youth Hostel in all Ireland (actually none of us were young!)
Originally a hunting lodge it’s sited at the northern edge of the Rosguill Peninsula in an Irish speaking (Gaeltacht) area. It was designed by a famous English architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, and is well worth a visit for this alone. But keep in mind that this is a very isolated place in the very rural area with the nearest pub more then two miles away.
The scenery around Trá na Rosann hostel, which can accommodate only 24 guests, is fantastic and the area surrounded by coastal wilderness and stunning cliffs, is magnificent for walking – a real walker’s paradise!
We walked for 3 days in a row, up to 6-8 hours every day. Our walks included: coastal walk along Rosguill Peninsula, walk around Horn Head, and Glenveagh National Park. How can I describe it? Probably my pictures can give some impression but they can’t compare with the reality.
A view of Tory Island which is situated 5km North West of Horn Head also deserves to be mentioned. 'Tory' derives its name from Gaelic 'Toraigh' meaning 'the high rocky cliffs' which speaks for itself.
It was my fourth visit to County Donegal and this is where an idea of God first occurred in my non-religious mind: if God didn’t create all this beauty then who did?
