On 30 July a group of intrepid Unitarian explorers headed off from the Church to visit Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park. Planes, boats and trains were used for transport (well, actually cars, and bikes for the really brave). On arrival we had a tasty lunch, and then ventured out to see what was available in the grounds. I don’t think any of us had any idea what we were getting into! A brass band played for the afternoon on the lawn, there was story-telling for children (unfortunately few of us had children with us so we didn’t have an excuse to try that, and were a bit reluctant to face kidnapping charges), tours of the house every half-hour (although the queues were quite long they were a great excuse to chat to people we didn’t know that well beforehand), as well as an exhibition space with Croatian drawings on show. All this was free, and it was great to see such good use of public funds, as the grounds were full of people enjoying themselves. It was a great opportunity for us to discover the inevitable connections with other Church members we didn’t know that well – ‘really, I love that too!’, or ‘I didn’t realise you too were…’ could be heard at regular intervals. It was also great to meet some new members, whose anonymity we will protect by not mentioning their names! Thanks to everyone who came, and to those who didn’t make it, there will be another event shortly. If you have any ideas for social events, please let us know. We’re currently trying to blackmail Rory into giving another of his walking tours around Dublin. Ooops – did we leave that in to go to print? |
