The Communications Workers Union Band has a long and proud tradition as Irelands premier Trade Union Brass Band. The band was founded by postal workers during the period prior to the foundation of the State when there was massive growth in the organisation of 'unskilled' workers into Trade Unions. The exact date of the foundation of the band is hard to verify but they were in existence prior to 1916 as all their instruments were destroyed in the GPO
during the Easter Rising. As the Post Office Workers Union Band they provided the beat to which many workers marched as they demonstrated against injustice or commemorated past heroes and events.
Today, under the skilled baton of Paddy Scarlett, they continue to be a regular feature at Labour events but are just as likely to be heard playing for one of the numerous organisations,
including this Church, to which they so generously lend their support during the year. The Band tours regularly and next year will be playing in the Irish College in Rome. We greatly appreciate the support we have received from the CWU Band in 2005 and 2006 and look forward to hearing them play in Stephens Green again in 2007. (see photos on Back Cover)
