Dublin Unitarian Church Restoration Project
The project of restoring the church is an enormous undertaking the estimated cost in 2002 was in the region of €1,500,000.
The first phase of the roof was completed in October 2003 and represents approximately 65% of the total roof area. All of this work was financed thanks to a number of private anonymous donations and individual efforts such as : “Maureen Ward’s” concert, Denis Conway’s “Easter Bunny”, The sale of Bill’s book of sermons and other publications, fundraising events, A grant of €50,000 from the National Heritage Council,
The final cost of €167,000 was paid in total from the restoration account without any borrowing.
The work schedule set for 2004 had to be postponed because of roadwork close to the LUAS line. This final phase of the roof work has also to include work to the stone on the tower because that roof section forms an integral part of this structure. This second phase started in July 2005 and is due to be completed at the end of October 2005.
The capping stone at the top of the tower and the Celtic style cross have been replaced, these two new pieces were hoisted into place on 3rd September 2005 early in the morning (see front cover). The final cost of this phase is in the region of €360,000
This 2005 part of the project received finance from: Anonymous donations,
Fundraising events, The plant sale, Book sale, Church publications,
The sale of Bill’s books. €6,000
Grant of €20,000 from: Heritage Policy (built) Architectural Heritage Protection Section Urban.
Grant of €24,000 from: Dublin Corporation Village Renewal Regional Organisational Programme,
Grant of €10,000 The Ireland Fund.
From Unitarians in England we appreciate a donation of €1000 towards stonework repairs to the tower from the John Gregson Trust. Royal College of Surgeons who financed the removal of the grill over the main North facing window
Your Standing Orders €10,000 annually.
Church Open day and collection €3,300.
The great achievement is that conservation work has started and with our spirit of optimism will continue on a yearly basis until our goal is reached. Thanks to all those who have contributed. We could not have come this far without you.
Thank you Restoration Committee.
