We are proposing to run another coming-of-age programme for boys and girls who are 12/13 years old, with a view to holding a coming-of-age ceremony at the end of January next year. The programme, devised by Rev. Maud Robison, is varied, involving learning about other religions, visiting Christian and non-Christian places of worship, learning about our own congregation, interviewing members of the congregation, and writing a personal Credo. The coming-of-age ceremony itself is modelled on the bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah ceremonies of the Jews, and Christian Confirmation. The young person reads from the lectern, chooses the hymns, and is then fussed over by the congregation at a party in the Damer Hall. It’s a chance for our own children to have a ‘confirmation’ type experience. Interested Parents of children in the appropriate age group should see Bill or Bridget to find out more details. (Following this programme is by no means compulsory, and our young people should be perfectly free to opt out, regardless of their parents’ wishes!)
