What we are Reading
Bait and Switch, Barbara Ehrenreich, Granta, approx £12
Barbara Ehrenreich who went under-cover in Nickel and Dimed to expose the low wage economy in the United States and how millions of Americans work full-time all the year round for poverty wages has now turned her waspish pen to “the futile pursuit of the corporate dream”. Disguising herself, as she is now so well-known, she became someone not jobless, but “in transition” seeking another job in the corporate world.
Her search, yet again shows the dark side of the American Dream, as she tours job fairs, career coaches, and networking meetings (often hosted by wacky “look-what-God-did-for-me” types) just to rejoin the corporate ladder. Her verdict: corporations are cruel places that regard employees as a barrier to profit, and they want you to be supremely confident, loyal, smiling, and a team player with passion. They want it all, and they “spit you out” at the same time as the CEO increases his bonus.
